Update January 15, 2010: 10 years in prison for Palestinian Wissam Freijeh for five counts of attempted murder

Wissam Freijeh - Palestinian shooter Odense, Denmark
Wissam Freijeh

The harrowing experiences have traumatized the Israeli victims, who were very afraid to witness in court in Odense.

Two of the cosmetics salesmen did not appear, while the third one was given armed police guards as soon as he arrived in Denmark to protect him against new attacks.

The Israeli asked that the defendant be removed from the room during his testimony, which was protested by Wissam Freije's lawyer Bjorn Elmquist, who also criticized the fact that the other two Israeli witnesses did not appear in court.

There are rumors in the immigrant circuit that Wissam Freijeh was promised 60,000 kr. for the attempted murder, the reason why he was picked for the job being that he has a Danish passport, and thus can not be deported. He was allegedly promised that his family would be taken care of while serving his prison sentence.

The police have tried to find evidence to substantiate these allegations, but in spite of having tried to collect information by bugging conversations, could find no evidence to support these claims.

From role model to gunman

I really hope everybody backs him up...

The 27 year old Palestinian who ran amok in the shopping mall Rosengaard Center in the Danish city of Odense was a paragon of virtue in an educational campaign.

'You yourself choose how to live your life'

With these words the municipality of Odense presented the at that time 22 year old Wissam Freijeh on a web page which urged 'youths' [a word often used to describe muslim immigrants] to get an education.

Wissam Freijeh who is now charged with attempted murder for having shot at two Israeli salesmen in the Rosengaard shopping centre in Odense, was used by the municipality as a good example and a role model for other immigrant youths.

In an interview on the web page preceding a workers Union manifestation in 2003, Wissam Freijeh tells how happy he is to have got an apprenticeship as a metalworker.

'I like my job, for here I can see that what I make is useful' Wissam Freijeh says in the interview.

In his teens he was unadjusted, criminal, hot-tempered and violent towards school teachers in primary school.

But he grew out of that. He got married with a Palestinian Diaspora woman, had two children and eased down, according to somebody who has known him since childhood.

In an interview in the local newspaper Fyens Stiftstidende, in 2004 one year before he served his apprenticeship, he said:

'I want to assist with giving the Danes a better impression of us foreigners'.

Wissam Freijeh admits having been in the mall with a hand gun, but denies that the shots were meant to kill.

Who were these Israeli salesmen at the shopping mall in Odense?
The whole thing appears very secretive. Neither the identity of the two Israeli salesmen, nor the owner of the Israeli company were identified. The owner of the company was interviewed on TV as Eli R., and the victim of the shooting was presented as C.T.

WMR has learned that one such kiosk operates at the MacArthur Center Mall in Norfolk, Virginia, where a number of U.S. Navy personnel from the nearby naval bases are regularly confronted by aggressive young
Israelis selling Dead Sea cosmetic products who inquire about where the personnel are stationed and the nature of their jobs. Young Israeli women working at the kiosk also appear to want to strike up a closer relationship with some of the naval personnel. More

Danish Palestinian leader Fathi Al-Abed discusses with Israeli ambassador Dan Oryan

Discussion about the Israeli invasion of Gaza between Danish Palestinian leader Fathi Al-Abed, Israeli ambassador in Denmark Dan Oryan and the leftwing Jewish journalist Adam Holm. 'Deadline' Danish Public Service TV January 5, 2009

The motivation for the incident is still unknown, because the court session was held behind closed doors 'because of regards for foreign powers', Wissam Freijeh has never hidden his hatred towards the state of Israel and Jews generally.

Palestine is my country, Wissam Freijeh declared five years ago in an interview with Fyens Stiftstidende.

At that time he had been one of the worst boys from the Vollsmose ghetto in Odense, he had changed his life, became a role model for others and talked about education and work, according to the official municipal multicult propaganda.

In the interview while still an apprentice at the production school Elsesminde in Odense he said he regretted his violent and criminal past, and said that he had a future.

Many of those who knew him said that they were completely taken by surprise, according to the newspaper Fyens Stiftstidende.

One of the papers sources who has known Wissam Freijeh since primary school expressed himself this way:

'He must have gone completely off his rocker.'

For after his teens with violence, fights and burglaries, most of those around Wissam Freijeh thought he was on his way to become more quiet.

He got himself an apprenticeship as a metal worker, got married with another Diaspora Palestinian woman, had two children and cut his connections with several of his old comrades in crime.

During his apprenticeship at a metal company in Odense he took care of his job and had good relations with his co-workers.

He respected the job and the rest of us, there were never any problems. He came to work timely and even joined in on social activities such as Christmas, a former colleague says.

He also remembers one episode though, where Wissam Freijeh's background and convictions collided with the world of the Danish apprentices.

At some point in time there was a story in the media about a man who had shot his wife, because she had left him. Wissam Freijeh thought that was only reasonable, because a woman should not leave her husband. The man had the right to shoot his wife, the co-worker remembers.

Had to quit job

As a newly educated metal worker Wissam Freijeh got a job in May 2005. But long time problems with his hip made it increasingly difficult for him to continue in his job.

In the end he had to give up and had to quit his job.

What happened from then and until new years day when he shot the two Israelis in the mall has so far been difficult to uncover, but according to one of Wissam Freijeh's old acquaintances who regularly met him in the Vollsmose ghetto, Wissam Freijeh always appeared happy.

That's why I was completely surprised that he could do this, says the acquaintance.

Radical viewpoints

Wissam Freijeh, just like his three brothers and two sisters was born in Lebanon and holds radical viewpoints in relation to the Palestinian / Israeli conflict.

According to sources who have spoken with him, he became very zealous when talking about politics.

Especially during discussions about the long conflict in the Middle East Wissam Freijeh spoke extremely patriotic, and did like many other Palestinians not hide his hatred against Israel and the Jews.

According to his defense lawyer Bjarne Rasmussen, he denies having shot with the intention to kill the two Israelis, but admits having been at the spot with a gun.

Many of the sources the newspaper Fyens Stiftstidende has talked with about Wissam Freijeh asked for anonymity. But their names are known by the newspaper staff.
